1.debate“辩论”、“争论”,可作动词或名词,动词后不跟 that 从句,着重双方正式辩论,各陈理由,有较强的“交锋”意味。

正式用词,多指围绕某一问题展开的或争论。侧重指意见观点对立的双方之间的正式或公开的争辩。

着重“双方各述己见”, 内含“交锋”的意思, 如:
We have been debating about the issue.
我们一直在就这个问题进行辩论。

I don't wish to debate my opinions with you. 我不想就我的想法同你辩论。

The Senate debated whether the new highway should be built or not.

2.argue只作动词,不能作名词用,为最普通用词,后可跟 that 从句,表示“说服,论证”或“企图说服”,指从心平气和的说理到言辞激烈的争论。“争辩”、“争论”、“争吵”,普通用词,指坚持己见与人争论自己不赞同或反对的事,着重说理、试图说服他人。

I argued with him for a long time, but he refused to listen to reason.

指“激烈争辩”, 含有“相持不下”或“未得解决”之意, 如:
Whether he will be elected as chairman is still disputed.
他是否当选为主席, 仍然有争论。

The opposing party disputed with the president on the government budget. 反对党就政府预算问题同总统激烈争执。

He disputed with his wife on household expenses.

含较强的主观意味,指坚决而明确地表示某事真实无误。

7. maintain v. 坚持说,坚持认为,如:

指坚决维护某种主张或观点等。

She maintained her innocence.

她坚持自己是无辜的。
